In response to the insistence that the Jewish community "say something" about what Israel is doing in Gaza, United European Jews states:
The idea that Jews are somehow connected to the state of Israel is a Zionist invention. And although there are Zionists who espouse that misbegotten idea, we are not Zionists. We are citizens and nationals of various countries, and Jews by religion. We have no more relationship to the state of Israel than we do to China. It is not incumbent on the Jewish community to comment on this or anything else Israel or China or any other foreign country does. No citizen of any country is obligated to explain, interpret, or comment on any action of foreign countries, in which they have no involvement. To claim Jews are connected to the state of Israel in any way or manner is anti-Semitic, as it casts the Jews as foreigners in their own countries.
We hereby disavow Israel's claim to speak in our name. Israel's claim to be the Jewish state is a unilateral contention, a fiction invented by Zionism.
The state of Israel has no standing to speak or act in the name of the Jews, as no country may claim to represent citizens of other countries. Israel has as much right to claim to be "the state of the Jews" as China does.
We further declare:
Israel is not the state of the Jews; it is the state of the Israelis.
Zionism is not the national liberation movement of the Jews; it is the national liberation movement of the Zionists.
Zionism is not Judaism. Judaism is an ancient religion; Zionism is a modern political movement.
Zionism is antithetical to Judaism. It masquerades as Judaism to garner support from Zionist Jews and Evangelicals. True Judaism opposes Zionism in all its forms. This includes the so-called "religious Zionism," which is nothing but idol worship and heresy, mixed with some trappings of Judaism.
Requiring Jews to comment on Israel's actions is itself a capitulation to Zionism, as it ties all Jews to Israel's actions. We owe allegiance only to our countries of residence, and we are not responsible for the actions of a foreign country to which we have no connection or relationship, unilateral claims of said country notwithstanding.
